چکیده

Abstract In many mammal species, mothers are crucial for the survival and development of young offspring. primates, maternal investment may ensure immatures’ also foster their social integration in group, providing long-term fitness benefits. this study, we analysed a wild group (N = 49) male philopatric spider monkeys ( Ateles geoffroyi ). We assessed whether is biased toward sons (compared with daughters) which factors modulate relation. studied 20 mother–offspring dyads, measuring time spent body contact, nursing, carrying, grooming, playing offspring, total 359 focal samples from February to July 2022. then ran generalized linear mixed models assess how these responses varied depending on two-way interactions offspring sex age, centrality. Our results showed that were more likely nurse, carry, have contact younger than older regardless sex. However, found invested female offspring; differences mediated by mothers’ age group. Older mothers, particular, carry daughters, whereas contrary was true mothers. Moreover, socially central be daughters. Overall, our study shows some behaviours sex-biased male-philopatric although experience

Color-vision polymorphism in wild capuchins (Cebus capucinus) and spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) in Costa Rica.

New World monkeys are unique in exhibiting a color-vision polymorphism due to an allelic variation of the red-green visual pigment gene. This makes these monkeys excellent subjects for studying the adaptive evolution of the visual system from both molecular and ecological viewpoints. However, the allele frequencies of the pigments within a natural population have not been well investigated. As ...

Chemical recognition of fruit ripeness in spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi)

Primates are now known to possess well-developed olfactory sensitivity and discrimination capacities that can play a substantial role in many aspects of their interaction with conspecifics and the environment. Several studies have demonstrated that olfactory cues may be useful in fruit selection. Here, using a conditioning paradigm, we show that captive spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) display...

Novelty-seeking temperament in captive stumptail macaques (Macaca arctoides) and spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi).

Novelty-seeking temperament is defined as the reaction to novel or risk situations and objects, and by the global disposition to explore such stimuli. Our purpose was to describe and compare this trait in primates. For this purpose, a risk-taking Index, a curiosity index, and a novelty-seeking index were correlated to several biosocial variables using 22 captive stumptail macaques (Macaca arcto...

Seasonal Changes in Socio-Spatial Structure in a Group of Free-Living Spider Monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi)

Ecological and social factors influence individual movement and group membership decisions, which ultimately determine how animal groups adjust their behavior in spatially and temporally heterogeneous environments. The mechanisms behind these behavioral adjustments can be better understood by studying the relationship between association and space use patterns of groups and how these change ove...

Fur rubbing behavior in free-ranging black-handed spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) in Panama.

Members of the population of black-handed spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) on Barro Colorado Island, Panama, use the leaves of three Rutaceae species in a behavior that resembles fur rubbing in the white faced capuchin (Cebus capucinus). This behavior has not been reported from other sites where Ateles has been studied. During more than 1,200 hours of observation, 30 episodes of this behavior ...
